Miwaukee's Best (Foodie Restaurants that is)

It's hard to believe we have been part-time Milwaukee residents for over a year.
We've always loved dining out and this two-city living makes keeping a stocked fridge challenging.  We have had a great time exploring the Milwaukee restaurant scene.
It took a little longer for us to find some good, neighborhood weekday spots, but our weekend or special occasion favorites were much easier to pin-point.
Inspired by the recent release of the 2013 Michelin Guide release,  I decided to make a list of my own.

Top Five Restaurants in Milwaukee for Foodies

1. Braise
This farm-to-table restaurant in Walkers Point which was featured in Chicago Tribune not long ago. Long communal tables in a urban, trendy atmosphere. The menu is created daily from local, seasonally available ingredients.  We shared small, medium and large dishes, each one executed with perfection.  Cocktails are delicious and great wine selection as well.
This is the only one of our top five we have been to twice and I'll be going for a third time.

2. Buckleys
Located in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, in an old house, this place is top notch.  The first time we came it was recommended by a friend of ours who is a chef, always a good sign.  The small size and decor make for a cozy dinner.  The food is superb.   What I have really come to love is the craft cocktails here.  Few places in Milwaukee can make a cocktail like Buckleys.  Perfect for an after work happy hour.

3.  Sanford
Ask anyone in Milwaukee, what is the best restaurant for fine dining and you'll likely get "Sanford" for the answer.  The chef has been nominated for James Beard award and to put the quality of this restaurant in perspective for my Chicago friends, it was only one spot behind Next on Forbes Top 100 list.  We tried the chef's tasting menu.  You will want to relive every single bite.  Who knew elk tasted so good?  We were dining with our well connected friends and had the opportunity for a kitchen tour after dinner.  The entire staff was so welcoming and not at all pretentious.  The ambiance is more sophisticated than the others on the list.  Timeless not trendy.  I will say, of the our top five, this was our most expensive meal, but we certainly indulged.

4.  Odd Duck
A lively small dish restaurant in Bayview.  We ate here with a group of 6 and ordered tapas style.  Each dish was better than the last and unlike other small dish restaurants, we actually left full and satisfied.  Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options.  I was really impressed when the bartenders had a craft "mocktail" challenge for our pregnant friend, trying to out-do each other making fancy alcohol free drinks.  This place is always packed with hipsters, so make a reservation far in advance.

5.  Wolf Peach
Finally, Wolf Peach, where we celebrated the end of my early 30s.  Perched in Brewers Hill with a view overlooking downtown MKE, the location could not be better.  The exposed brick, chandeliers and wood decor make the interior as spectacular as the view.  We ordered several small and medium dishes for sharing.  Our top votes went to the sea scallops (me) and steak tartare (jay).  Impeccable service and excellent drink selections.

Come visit!
Neighborhood favorites coming soon :)
