Worm Week

With only 6 more months to go in my fellowship in Gastroenterology, this week was a first. Two different patients were found to have two different types of worms!! Not a terribly common occurrence in the United States.

The first patient was found to have Taenia Solium during a colonoscopy completed for weight loss. You could actually see the little proglottid swimming like an accordion in the cecum.
Here is how the worm got there:

The next patient was found to have irritation in his duodenum which was biopsied. Under the microscope he was found to have a Strongyloides infection!

HOW DID THAT GUY GET THERE??? Here's how..

Interesting week!!

Christmas 2010

What a great Christmas! I spent it at my parents on Payne Lake. We went to the local church for Christmas Eve service, which is quaint but still moving with an excellent sermon and candlelit singing to Silent Night.

Mom gave us our annual Christmas Eve gift of new pjs to be worn the following morning.
Here Dani, Elizabeth and I model our Christmas Pajamas.

We are still kids at the TenCates and Santa is good to us!

False teeth made by a good family friend, Dr. Bruce VanDuine. He passed away nearly 20 years ago, but his humor lives on.
Elizabeth was more interested in eating the wrapping paper than the gifts.

Christmas afternoon all The TenCate cousins, aunts and uncles came over for some old fashioneds and some chaos.

Buddies enjoying a rare quiet moment at The TenCate Family Christmas.
The next day we made the long treck next door to my Aunt Pam's house for the Marsh family Christmas. It's nice having all your extended family within walking distance! Next time I go home the new casino should be open.....who's coming with me?!?
