Memorial Weekend

The weather was perfect this weekend and was packed with fun! The highlight was a 3 hour sailing adventure on Lake Michigan with some friends. Not much wind, but the Oberon was flowing and the views spectacular.

Road to Ironman Part 4: River Bank Run 25K

Last weekend I join 17,000 other athletes in my longest run, The 25K River Bank Run. The weather wasn't ideal, but overall the race was a great experience. Pre-race anxiety was calmed by hanging out with the Hamm clan and some other friends. The loop course made it fun to try to spot racers I knew. Having my parents strategically placed at the halfway point was also a great pick me up when the race started to feel long. The hills were unlike anything I've run on before. I was proud of running the entire race and really surprised myself at the speed I was able to maintain for the first 10 miles. I also learned first hand the effects of electrolyte deficiency at the end of the race, but managed to run through some pretty horrible leg cramps and finish faster than my overall goal. And there was nothing sweeter than the Schlitz waiting for me after hobbling up the hill after the race.

Here I am going strong at the turn around point.

Drew gives my parents a wave as he flies by the half way point.

The entire race took me 2:32:00. Tonight my coach told us our longest run prior to the Ironman will be 3 hours, so I am almost there!!!

Michigan Headed to NCAA Water Polo Tourney

This weekend is the NCAA Water Polo Championship. Michigan sealed a bid to the tourney after winning the regional championships two weeks ago. The tournament structure was changed in 2001. Since then, no team outside of California has ever played in the championship game. This year Michigan is one of only 3 non-California based teams in the 8 team tournament. The other two being Hawaii and Marist College. #6 seed Michigan will play the defending champions and #3 seed UCLA in the opening round. GO BLUE!

After recently retrieving many interesting objects from patient's intestines this week, I was intrigued by the spork.

A spork (also known as a foon or runcible spoon) is a hybrid of a spoon and fork dating back to the late 1800s. Several patents and designs date back to 1874 and the word first appeared in the Dictionary in 1909. Many are designed as reusable or desposible and therefore are often found in fast-food resturants and prisoners' stomachs.
